The Biblical world view is quite clear. The stakes of life and death are on the line every minute of every day. C.S. Lewis wrote:
“There is no neutral ground in the universe. Every square inch, every split second is claimed by God, and counterclaimed by Satan.”
As men, husbands, and fathers, we are the watchmen who stand on the watchtower and exist in a state of alertness and protection over our wives and kids. If I fall asleep, Satan and his deceitful and dangerous schemes are unhindered to enter the city of our lives and homes. As wives and kids, we stand a post as well. The post of prayer, protection, obedience, and unity. The whole family must be trained to be on watch and to engage in the battle every day. The battle rages everyday whether we see it, believe it, or experience its presence.
1 Peter 5:8 says: “Be sober- minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
There was a season when God’s watchmen fell asleep though self-centeredness, laziness, and disobedience. Isaiah issued a striking warning in Isaiah 56:9-12:
All you beasts of the field, come to devour—
all you beasts in the forest.
His watchmen are blind;
they are all without knowledge;
they are all silent dogs;
they cannot bark,
dreaming, lying down,
loving to slumber.
The dogs have a mighty appetite;
they never have enough.
But they are shepherds who have no understanding;
they have all turned to their own way,
each to his own gain, one and all.
“Come,” they say, “let me get wine;
let us fill ourselves with strong drink;
and tomorrow will be like this day,
great beyond measure
